SELF STUDY
The central ideas of this project – a study on layering techniques to achieve vibrant colors with acrylic paint on a brown paper base; an incorporation of common motifs found among my personal work;
an exploration of texture and warping as an intentional effect.

In the creative process, there are times when a component of a project invites improvement or change. In the image above, the painting to the left invited just that.
I re-evaluated what made the painting to the right so successful (2). From there, I found that its color palette, naturalistic rendering, and dominant use of yellow are the key features that supported that success. In my next attempt, I implemented these features to create a complimentary painting (3).
A diptych on delight.
PROCESS

The challenge of painting vibrant colors on a dark surface invited an opportunity to prime and color the paper while it was still wet. This technique allowed for the brush strokes in the yellow background to create movement through implied lines that follow the silhouette of the figure (left).
